Sign a PDF online for free

Type your name or upload an image of your signature, place it on the document, and download the signed PDF. The file never leaves your browser.

Everything runs in your browser. Your PDF and signature are never uploaded to PDFGate.

How it works

  1. Step 1Open your PDFDrop the file on the page or pick it from your device. It is read by your browser, not sent to a server.
  2. Step 2Add your signatureType your name in a handwritten style or upload a photo of your signature. If the PDF has signature fields, click “Sign here” on each one. Otherwise click anywhere on the page, then drag and resize.
  3. Step 3Download the signed PDFThe signature is drawn into the page as an image and the file is saved to your device.

What this tool does, and what it doesn't

This is a simple signature stamp. It is the right tool for signing a form or letter that someone asked you to return. It is not an electronic signature service with identity checks and a tamper-proof record.

  • Places a typed or uploaded signature image on any page
  • Detects signature fields in fillable PDFs and fills them
  • Removes the white background from a photographed signature
  • Works on multi-page PDFs up to 50 MB, entirely in your browser
  • Does not add a digital certificate or lock the document against later changes
  • Does not verify who signed or keep an audit log
  • Does not open password-protected PDFs or fill XFA forms

If you need signatures that hold up in a dispute, with signer verification, a certificate, and an audit log, use the digital signature API, or to see how to start signing from the dashboard.

For developers

Collect legally binding signatures from your own product

The free tool above stamps an image. The PDFGate API does the whole job. It generates the document, emails the signer or embeds the signing screen in your app, verifies the signer with a one-time code, seals the PDF with a certificate, and keeps an audit log. Three API calls, with a sandbox to build in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about PDFGate.

No. The PDF is opened and edited with JavaScript in your browser. The signed file is built on your device and nothing is sent to PDFGate or any other server. If you close the tab, the file is gone.

In most countries a typed or drawn signature on a document can be a valid electronic signature, and many everyday forms are signed this way. What this tool does not provide is proof of who signed and when, or protection against later edits. For contracts where that matters, use an e-signature service with signer verification, a certificate, and an audit log.

If the PDF has signature form fields, the tool shows a “Sign here” marker on each one. Your signature is scaled to fit the field, drawn into the page, and the empty field is removed so other viewers do not show an unsigned placeholder. Fields you leave empty are kept as they are.

Yes. Click “Add signature”, then click anywhere on the page. You can drag the signature to the right spot, resize it from the corner, and add it to as many pages as you need.

PDFs with a password or editing restrictions are encrypted, and the tool cannot rewrite them. Open the file in a PDF viewer, save a copy without the password, and try again.

Use the PDFGate digital signature API. It generates the document, sends the signing link or embeds the signing screen in your app, verifies the signer, and returns a sealed PDF with an audit log. There is a sandbox environment and a 14-day free trial.
